On Friday, the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan hosted a meeting of the parliamentary commission for monitoring the implementation of national goals and objectives in the field of sustainable development on the topic: “Development of alternative energy sources and green technologies in Kazakhstan as part of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.” During the meeting, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev informed the participants about the potential of Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sources.
“The Republic of Kazakhstan, with its area ranking ninth in the world, has significant potential for the development of the renewable energy sector. Vast territories of the country have a high potential for the development of wind, solar and hydropower, the introduction of modern technologies and sustainable development. In the near future, the Republic has every opportunity to take a leading position in the world in the development of wind generation,” Satkaliyev said at the meeting.
At the same time, wind generation, according to the minister, can be as stable as possible, evenly distributed throughout the country, and minimally affect the growth of tariffs for end consumers.
The climate in Kazakhstan is favorable for the construction of wind farms due to the presence of wind corridors with a wind speed of more than 5 m/s, which is necessary for the operation of wind turbines. According to expert estimates, the energy potential of wind energy in Kazakhstan is at least 920 billion kWh per year.
At the same time, the Caspian region, the southern region, as well as the Shelek corridor and the Dzungarian gates, located in the southeast of the country, have the highest potential for wind energy.
The head of the department also noted the potential of solar energy. So, in the southern regions of the country, it is about 2200-3000 hours of sunshine per year, which allows us to be competitive with the sunniest countries in the world.
The most preferred areas for solar generation are the Aral Sea region and the southern regions of Kazakhstan.
